Active Minds promotes mental health awareness

Kirkwood Club Corner

How did the club get started?  Active Minds is a national student-run organization started by Alison Malmon after losing her brother to suicide.

The Kirkwood Active Minds club was started in the spring of 2012 by the Kirkwood counseling staff in an effort to open up the conversation about mental health on campus.

What is the purpose of the club?  The purpose of the club is to promote mental health awareness at Kirkwood and reduce stigma in an effort to increase help-seeking behavior.

What are the benefits of joining?  Active Minds allows students to develop leadership skills, increase knowledge of both mental health issues and on and off campus resources, and is an excellent resume builder and networking opportunity.

How can students get involved?  Students can email Angie Ziesman Weiler at aziesma@kirkwood.edu to get more information and to be added to the email list.

When and where do you meet?  We meet on Thursdays from 11:15 a.m. – noon in 2014 Iowa Hall.

What type of activities take place at club meetings?  We typically are brainstorming ideas for upcoming events, planning upcoming events, or being educated about mental health issues and resources (e.g. Green Bandana training).

Is there anything else you would like to add?  We have a great group of students who are really passionate about mental health awareness.

You are welcome to join at any point in the semester and you can be as involved as your schedule allows.
